(Yes, we are a little behind on the blog, but we hope to start catching up!). Monday, I rejoined the expedition after being away for a few days. We headed to Yorktown, and focused on the Revolutionary War history (also Civil War history here, and early settlements). This was the last major battle of the Revolutionary war, although the war did not offically end until some time later. George Washington and the French defeated Cornwallis here. The first picture is what General Washington's dining tent likely looked like, in fact the roof is his actual tent, used in the war. Ironically it was stored at a relatives house, which ultimately became General Lee's house. It was "recovered" during the Civil War.
The house with Amanda and the kids is the actual site of the surrender signed by Cornwallis and the British. It was something to stand in the room and relaize that Washington and the British had settled the last major standoff right there, that resulted in our country.
While walking through the streets of Yorktown we also ran into a relative of the governor, who had recently moved into town. His relative had signed the declartion of independence and here we were on the streets of Yorktown talking to him. In a place with a Smith street, anything can happen! After leaving there, we moved on to the Charlottesville KOA for the night.
